Comet Lovejoy and Southern Cross

Comet Lovejoy was captured in the starry sky over the Atacama Desert. The comet, which has been observed in the southern hemisphere since late December, still shows off its beautiful shape with long white tail as distinctly as the Milky Way, although its brightness is weakened with distance from the Sun. You can see the Southern Cross in the upper part of the photo and two bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri in the middle.
