September 11 is now globally recognized as the day of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, but in Chile, it is the day of the military coup which was attempted by Augusto Pinochet in 1973. On September 11, young Chileans take to the streets to stage a protest march, and some of them resort to more radical means such as throwing rocks or fire bottles. This picture was taken near the market in Patronato, Santiago on Sunday, September 10. People are waiting for a bus with their nose covered because of strange odor of tear gas. The child looks exhausted on the mothers shoulder. The white stuff scattered around on the street are tissues thrown away by the people who suffer from sneezing by tear gas. There used to be a glass panel behind the bench, but it was shattered and gone. In the opposite lane, water wagons were washing the roads and a large number of riot policemen were standing by on the bridge over Mapocho River. Facing a situation like this, I realize Japan is a safe nation and appreciate its well-maintained public peace.
