On the final day of the Astronomical Society of Japan meeting, a report related to ALMA was given in the session on the ground-based instruments. The picture was taken during the progress report on ALMA and shows Tetsuo Hasegawa, ALMA-J Project Manager, making an announcement that the first fringe was successfully obtained by using two ALMA prototype antennas as one combined system. A unit of two antennas is the smallest composition in ALMA where signals from many antennas are synthesized for image construction. The test was conducted at the ALMA Test Facility in the United States on March 2, and its success proved that the hardware and software under development for ALMA are functioning properly.
