Chilean presidential election is held every four years (incumbent president is not allowed to run for consecutive terms in office). In this presidential election, Michelle Bachelet won the runoff and has become the first woman president in Chile. In the center of Santiago, people poured into the main street to celebrate the new president, and expressed their feverish excitement waving flags with the new president’s name and national flags from cars. The frenzy continued until midnight with honking horns. The picture shows a temporary barricade built with soft drink cases to seal off access to liquor selling space in a major supermarket. They had to take these measures because liquor sale on the presidential election day is prohibited by law. In addition, abstention is also prohibited except official approval in advance. If you violate the law, you will have to pay a fine of about 180 thousand pesos or will be taken into custody as a punishment.
