A huge amount of molecular gas (the fuel for star formation) was detected in a monster galaxy dating back 8.8 billion years by the RAINBOW Interferometer at Nobeyama Radio Observatory with the worlds highest sensitivity. The research paper on these findings is in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan issued on December 25. This noteworthy achievement was also covered by major national newspapers. The picture shows Daisuke Iono, postdoctoral fellow, explaining the significance of these findings at a press conference held on December 22. Nearly 10 newspaper publishers joined the conference and listened attentively the presentation by Iono. According to his collaborator Yoichi Tamura, graduate student of the University of Tokyo, this galaxy can be detected by ALMA within 5 seconds.
