Mitaka Open House Day 2014

On October 25, NAOJ Open House Day 2014 was held at the NAOJ Mitaka Campus. Under the clear autumn sky, the event attracted more than 4000 people.

The ALMA booth presented poster/diorama exhibitions, movies, and mini-lectures introducing the latest information and scientific results of the project and the current status of the ALMA site in Chile. In the mini-lectures, Yuichi Matsuda, an assistant professor at the East Asian ALMA Regional Center (EA ARC) and Kazuya Saigo, an assistant professor, talked about their researches on galaxies and star formation. Also we have a live streaming of the talk with Seiji Kameno, professor at the NAOJ Chile Observatory, who are working at the control room of the ALMA Operations Support Facility in Chile via Skype.

This year’s special feature of the ALMA booth was VR goggle Oculus Rift to experience the ALMA Operations Support Facility (OSF) and Array Operations Site (AOS). People wearing the goggle saw the 360-degree photos taken by NAOJ staff in Chile as well as fish-eye, time-lapse videos for planetarium programs produced by Konica Minolta Planetarium. It seemed to be a very exciting and extraordinary experience that they cannot have in their daily life.
