Norio Kaifu, Director General of NAOJ gave an annual new year speech at Mitaka, which was shared with three other observatories using videoconference system): Mizusawa Astrogeodynamics Observatory, Nobeyama Radio Observatory and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (Subaru Telescope Base Facility in Hawaii was closed for holiday). In the speech, he spoke about severe budget constraints on science projects and many scientific results like those achieved by Subaru Telescope, mentioning steady development progress of ALMA as well.
