Nobeyama Open Campus 2015

On August 22, Nobeyama Open Campus 2015 was held at NAOJ Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO). NAOJ Chile Observatory presented exhibitions showing the progress of the ALMA and ASTE telescopes, which includes posters and videos on basic information of the two telescopes and their latest scientific achievements, as well as exhibition of two receiver cartridges of Bands 4 and 8, which were manufactured by NAOJ. As these receiver cartridges are almost the same ones that have been installed in the ALMA antennas in Chile, they gave strong impression to visitors.

Alvaro Gonzalez (assistant professor) and Yasunori Fujii (research engineer) are the researchers who have been engaged in the development of ALMA receivers. They explained the mechanism of the receiver to visitors.

Mini-lecture is a highlight attraction of the ALMA/ASTE booth every year. This year’s lecture was about the universe observed with ALMA and ASTE. Also, another feature of this year was a booth to make hanging paper ALMA telescope with four pieces of papers each of which has a printed different type of ALMA antenna and one with a transporter. This booth attracted mainly kids, and they were working on the craft with enthusiasm.

It was a sunny day, and many people visited the event, including a PR character of Nagano prefecture called “ARUKUMA” and NRO original character called “Teacher Nobeyama”. People enjoyed a “festival day” in Nobeyama once a year.
