The opening ceremony of AMiBA (Array for Microwave Background Anisotropy) was held at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. AMiBA, a millimeter interferometer like ALMA, was constructed by ASIAA (Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics) and National Taiwan University for polarimetry of microwave background radiation and detection of distant clusters of galaxies using the Sunyaev Zeldovich effect. The ceremony was conducted in a solemn atmosphere, according to the traditional local ritual. The weather was fine and the clear blue skies seemed a good omen for a start of the new observational instrument. The attendees from NAOJ were Shoken Miyama, Director General of NAOJ, Hiroshi Karoji, Director of Research Cooperation, Masahiko Hayashi, Director of the Subaru Telescope, and Masato Ishiguro, Director of ALMA-J Project Office. The picture shows Paul Ho, Director of ASIAA and M. Ishiguro, striking a pose in front of AMiBA.
