In the evening of April 16, 2011, the memorable 60th “Astronomy Pub” was held at the Mitaka Network University.Astronomy Pub this time held a one-hour talk titled “Over the Horizon – Universe Seen from the Southern Hemisphere” between Kyoko Muroi (former public outreach official at the NAOJ Public Relations Center) as a guest and Masaaki Hiramatsu (ALMA-J Education and Public Outreach Officer, Assistant Professor at NAOJ) as the host. Showing the starry sky photographed at an observation site in Australia, Ms. Muroi talked about how different the appearances of quarter moon and constellations are between northern and southern hemisphere, while Hiramatsu explained about celestial objects seen in Chile where the ALMA telescope is being constructed. The participants seemed to have fully enjoyed observation of southern stars that are not seen in Japan.
The picture shows Assistant Professor Hiramatsu explaining Small Magellanic Cloud in the sky over the antennas at the ALMA Operation Support Facility (OSF).
