Swordsmen in Atacama

Since ALMA is an international project, people from many different countries are working together. At the Operation Support Facility (OSF) at 2900 m asl, many of the ALMA staff refresh themselves playing sports during a break. Among several sports clubs at the OSF, there is a Kendo club, where six members are practicing this Japanese traditional martial art using bamboo swords. One of the members says, “I have been practicing Kendo since my college days. Kendo is good to enforce discipline and power of concentration.” The current club members are all international staff members at the ALMA Joint ALMA Office (JAO) and there is no Japanese member. We hope to see someday brave Japanese swordsmanship in this hostile high-altitude environment with low oxygen.
