Former president of Chile, Augusto Pinochet, who led the military junta for 16 and half years, died at a military hospital about around 2:00 pm on December 10. His body was transferred from the hospital to the military college, Escuela Militar, where the funeral was conducted by the military on December 12. Since Escuela Militar is only a station away from the JAOs nearest station, Alcantara, we were afraid of possible demonstrations and traffic control, but there were no major troubles. Pinochet, in his later years, was charged with criminal responsibility for violating human rights of the leftists while he was in power. On the other hand, he is praised for toppling the Salvador Allendes communist regime by coup and restoring the countrys economy. Public opinion about him is divided in Chile. The picture shows a passerby looking at a newspaper with a headline about Pinochets death.
