Director General Tsuneta makes courtesy visits to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and others in Chile

In conjunction with the ALMA Board meeting held in Santiago (Chile) on November 14-18, 2022, NAOJ Director General Saku Tsuneta made courtesy visits to the Embassy of Japan in Chile (November 14), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile (November 16), and the Department of Astronomy of the University of Chile (November 18).

 

At the Embassy of Japan in Chile, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Ambassador of Japan in Chile, Mr. SHIBUYA Kazuhisa, to express their gratitude for the Embassy’s understanding and support of NAOJ’s activities in Chile, and to discuss the promotion of academic exchanges between Japan and Chile in the future.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Tsuneta paid a courtesy visit to Ambassador Ximena Fuentes, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of Chile. He expressed his appreciation for the Ministry’s understanding and support of NAOJ’s activities in Chile and discussed the importance of astronomy in Chile and activities to protect the observing environment.

Finally, at the Department of Astronomy of the University of Chile, Dr. Tsuneta paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Ricardo Muñoz, Chair of the Department. Together with researchers from University of Chile and Japanese members of the ALMA Board, Dr. Muñoz and the NAOJ delegation discussed the results of past cooperative projects between NAOJ and the Department of Astronomy of the University of Chile, and exchanged opinions on future expansion of their long-standing collaboration.
