Smog in Santiago

While June is a rainy season before summer in Japan, it’s turning into winter in Chile in the southern hemisphere. The city of Santiago, where ALMA-J Chile Office is located, is often filled with smog due to its geographical features. Since the city is surrounded by the Andes on the three sides (north, south, and east), the wind from west cannot pass through the city. In winter, there is a mild wind from west all day, which brings smoggy air into the city. Except big windy days, the sky is always covered with thick smog as shown in the photos on the left side. Compared with the photos without smog on the right side, you can see the difference.
