Joint ALMA Observatory Open Day 2025

On March 21, 2025, NAOJ participated in the public event "Open Day 2025" held at the Joint ALMA Observatory in Santiago, Chile.

The event, held in conjunction with Chile’s “Astronomy Day,” featured around 30 different activities for local schools and the general public, attracting over 800 visitors in total.

At the NAOJ’s booth, an origami workshop was held where participants tried their hand at three types of origami (rockets, stars, and antennas), using instructional videos and printed guides.

Some participants struggled with their first origami experience, but with support from the staff, they were able to complete their creations and cheered with excitement.

Among many engaging activities such as solar observations, neon art, discussions with researchers, and control room tours, the origami workshop ranked in the top four for number of visitors and in the top five for most enjoyable activities, according to the visitor survey!

We will continue to hold events in Chile to raise awareness of the ALMA telescope and the activities of the NAOJ!
